The Benefits and Limitations of Self Hypnosis

Imagine being able to put yourself into a trance-like state and access the benefits of hypnosis on your own. I’ve done this myself many times, especially when I’ve felt the need to internalize new ideas or let positive changes really sink into my mind.
There was one particular experience that really stands out. I was working with a coach at the time, who wasn’t trained in hypnosis, but I had already learned how to shift myself into that focused, inward state.
So, during our sessions, I’d put myself in a kind of trance. I let the words and ideas flow over me, allowing them to go deeper than they would’ve in a regular conversation. It was like letting my subconscious absorb everything, and it ended up helping me connect with those ideas on a much deeper level.
What Self-Hypnosis Really Is: The Skill of Relaxation
A big part of self-hypnosis is understanding that relaxation is actually a skill you can practice and get better at. When you use self-hypnosis, you’re learning to change your state of mind, almost like switching gears.
Trying to work through something complicated all on your own, in a trance state, can be like trying to be both the driver and the navigator on a road trip.
In everyday life, our minds are often in this “doing mode” where we’re analyzing, thinking, and solving problems. But in hypnosis, you move to a place that’s more about flow, letting go, and just being in the moment.
This is something you can learn to do more quickly and effectively, with practice.
Why Self-Hypnosis Can Be Challenging
Now, as amazing as self-hypnosis can be, there are times when it can be a bit tricky to utilize it fully on your own. Trying to work through something complicated all on your own, in a trance state, can be like trying to be both the driver and the navigator on a road trip.
You’re letting yourself relax, but you’re also trying to figure out where to go and what to do, which can feel like contradictory forces pulling you in different directions.
That’s where having someone else, like a trained hypnotist, can be a beneficial. With someone else guiding, you get to be a passenger, fully immersed in the experience, without worrying about where you’re headed. That way, the session can go even deeper because you’re free from having to steer.
The Power of Guided Hypnosis: Going Deeper with Support
Self-hypnosis is powerful on its own, but sometimes you need a bit of extra support to tackle the deeper stuff. When someone else guides the session, they’re like your compass, helping you stay grounded so you can dive into the areas that might feel a little tougher to reach alone. This kind of support can make it easier to explore things like past traumas, unresolved issues, or complex emotions. The guide takes on the role of “big picture” thinker, letting you focus on the experience without getting lost in thought.
Finding Your Own Path
Self-hypnosis is a great tool for personal growth, self-discovery, and inner peace. But it’s also a practice that takes time, patience, and sometimes a little help along the way. Whether you’re using it on your own or working with a guide, hypnosis invites you to explore your inner world, to embrace whatever comes up, and to keep moving forward.
